Heat Treatment simulation of Ni-alloy

Post by CharMIC » Mon Feb 26, 2018 4:31 pm

Hi,

I am doing some heat treatment simulation using a microstructure that I created using a solidification simulation of a Ni-Alloy. For the heat treatment simulation I am using the restart option with reset_time and use directly an initial temperature where I do the heat treatment.

I want to clarify regarding the updating interval for diffusion data from ges5 file. Since the heat treatment is keeping the microstructure at constant temperature, can I use relatively larger time steps as update interval?

or I have to keep the update interval that I used for the solidification simulation (where I got my initial microstructure)

Hi Chamara,

This depends a lot on the initial situation. In most cases, the initial microstructure will not be in equilibrium, except you do the heat treatment exactly at the same temperature as where you stopped with solidification. This means that the linearisation parameter which are stored with the .rest file have been made at different temperatures. Thus, you need some early updates anyway.

Apart from that, of course, updating intervals can and must be much longer compared to solidification. Ideal would be an increasing interval, which you can obtain by choosing the linearisation interval "from file".

If the end of solidification was at very different temperature compared to heat treatment, and you get trouble from the temperature jump (numerical problems), you should think of simulating a heating ramp before heat treatment.

Many Thanks for the input Bernd.

If I want to use update interval from file, how should the format be look like?

eg

0 60 1 (0 to 60s in steps of 1s)
60 1000 10 (60 to 1000s in steps of 10s)

No, it is the usual tabular form with two columns:

#t /s Interval/s
0.0 1.0
60.0 10.0
1000 100.
...

Note that values are interpolated linearly. If you do not want that:

#t /s Interval/s
0.0 1.0
59.99 1.0
60.0 10.0
999.99 10.0
1000. 100.
...

Hej Bernd,

Just a curiosity question. Is there any example available in MICRESS 6.4 for heat treatment simulation?

Dear Chamara,

presently there is not yet such an example available for MICRESS.

Hej Bernd,

Is it okay to use the restart with structure_only option for heat treatment simulations?

If I do like this I can change the parameter for diffusion data, right?

Hi Chamara,

Yes, this is the way it should be done.

With "restart structure_only", apart from the number of elements, you can change practically everything!

Hej Bernd,

I am trying to do heat treatment simulation using "restart structure only" option. I am reading a microstructure which do not have a liquid phase. Only phases that are present is Gamma and Laves. I am doing the heat treatment at the same temperature where solidification simulation stopped.

During the solidification simulation I did not get any errors also.

But I get this error at the starting the heat treatment simulation..

What could be the reason for this?
