Hi

We have been analyzing the microstructure of casted stainless steels using
MICRESS for several years. As for a next step, we are going to get started
to analyze the microstructure of the weld heat affected zone of the rolled
stainless steels in order to figure out the effect of the grain coarsening
and boundary segregation, et al. on the stress corrosion cracking.
Please let me know if there is anything useful subset of subroutine programs
for MICRESS so that we can move on to new research projects.

currently there seems to exist quite a lot of interest in welding simulations. If considering grain growth in the HAZ, MICRESS can read in temperature-time profiles e.g. from macroscopic welding simulations which together with a temperature-dependent interface mobility will allow for the simulation of grain sizes. The approach is exemplarily shown with the MICESS example "Grain_growth_Profiles_dri" and has also be used in the group of Matthias Militzer (http://proceedings.asmedigitalcollectio ... id=1721467).

We ourselves did also quite a lot of work with respect to melting and resolidification during welding, including morphology changes in the heat-affected zone, and there will also be several new features coming along with the next MICRESS version (6.2) which will hopefully be released before end of the year. These features include e.g.
- mechanisms for reading and combining results from previous simulations as initial microstructures for welding simulations
- improved possibilities for nucleation of liquid during melting processes
- improved description of diffusion data in simulations with strong temperature gradients
- improved misorientation models for grain growth simulation.

There is also a related publication of our group at the ICASP4 conference (G. J. Schmitz, B. Böttger and M. Apel: On the role of solidification modelling in Integrated Computational Materials Engineering “ICME”) which will appear soon in the Journal of Physics Conference Series.
